Chapter Twenty-One

“YOU HAVE found something?” Hu asked after she linked her hand around mine. “You feel very excited.”

“I think we found where you and your blender were before you bonded together.” I stared up at her face, seeing something more now that I’d read so much of her beloved’s story. She didn’t seem so… alien. “We need to take your egg now.”

The column of stone jutted upward. “It is ready for you to take. You will ensure the survival of my egg?”

“We will do our very best,” I promised. “We’ll try to find the Ancients and a blender for her. If we can’t, we’ll try to find a suitable growing environment.”

Hu tightened her grip around my hand. “I knew you were my salvation.” Her angular face didn’t show expression like I was used to, but I could sense her extreme gratitude and relief. She’d faced her own death, cut off from anyone who could provide any comfort. Some nights, I still woke up, a scream locked in my throat and sweat soaking the sheets. Fieo never said anything; he just held me and shared all the love he felt for me through our joining.

Tears stung my eyes. I pressed my lips together and nodded. “You’ve given me a chance at learning about my past, and maybe discovering my future. Thank you.” We stood together for a long moment, and then Hu let me go, her form sinking back into the ground.

All that was left behind was her egg.

“What do you need?” Fieo asked.

I needed a moment to collect myself, but that wasn’t feasible. We had places to go. “I will carry her egg. No one else can touch it. The chamber should be flooded with carbon dioxide, and the airlock ready to close behind me. I don’t know how long she can survive once we’re on the ship, so we have to run.” I was not exactly the most graceful of people.

“Stay close,” I told Fieo. “If I fall, help me up, but do not touch Hu’s egg under any circumstances. It would be very dangerous for both of you.” I’d warned them many times, but it never hurt to say it again. As soon as I stepped inside the airlock, they’d close the outer door and flood the tiny space with the gases the egg needed to survive. Then I’d open her chamber and settle the egg in the safe place the crew had created for her.

“Got it.” Fieo turned to the guards. “Make a line to the ship. You heard Nick. Help him if he needs it, but don’t interfere with the egg. Durgula, is the chamber ready?” Fieo asked over his com.

“Primed with the airlock door wide open and waiting for your tziu to step inside. I have my hand over the release button.”

I strode over to the jutting stone holding Hu’s egg. She’d wrapped the tiny pulsing egg inside even more protective layers of blue stone. Lines appeared around it and part of the stone moved back.
